The Centre has decided to reduce disturbed areas under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Nagaland, Assam and Manipur after decades.

In a series of tweets, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, the reduction in areas under the AFSPA is a result of the improved security situation and fast-tracked development due to the consistent efforts and several agreements to end insurgency and bring lasting peace in the North East. 


He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his unwavering commitment saying that the  North-Eastern region, which was neglected for decades is now witnessing a new era of peace, prosperity and unprecedented development. 


The Minister congratulated the people of North East on this momentous occasion.   Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in a tweet expressed gratitude the centre for reducing disturbed areas under AFSPA in the states of Nagaland, Assam & Manipur. Rio said this is a significant development towards bringing stability, security and prosperity to the North East region.


Also, 9 Districts of Nagaland and 4 areas of Police Stations declared as disturbed areas under AFSPA.

Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, Peren and Zunheboto districts in Nagaland and the areas falling within the jurisdiction of Kuzhama Kohima North, Kohima South, Zubza and Kezhocha police stations in Kohima district, Mangkolemba, Mokokchung-1, Longtho, Tuli, Longchem, and Anaki ‘C’ police stations in Mokokchung district, Yanglok police station in Longleng district and Bhandari, Champang, Ralan, and Sungro Police Stations in Wokha district were declared as disturbed areas under section 3 of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act,1958 for a period of six months with effect from 1st of April 2022, unless withdrawn earlier. 


According to an AIR report, this was stated in a notification issued by Ministry of Home Affairs yesterday.
