MEMES, POPULAR MEME TEMPLATES.

WHAT IS MEME?

Meme is an image, video, piece of text, etc., typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by internet users, often with slight variations.

Memes are usually jokes, urban legends, viral videos, funny pictures or contagious music, spreading like a virus, traveling from one person to another swiftly until it takes on a life of its own. ‘Meme’, pronounced meem, was coined by Richard Dawkins. Memes today hugely influence modern language and culture. They shape how the youth, and the whole internet user population for that matter, live their lives.

HOW DID THE MEME CULTURE GROW?

As the roots of Internet grew, the audience for memes grew. People started recognizing memes, and as the audience grew, templates were now overused. They started becoming “stale”. Now the creators had to evolve. They slowly started abandoning these overused templates. Calling users that still related to them cancerous and autistic.

And so, as the humour evolved, the term “memes” came to encompass a plethora of humour. There were “normie” memes, ie, overused templates that failed to evoke any humour. There were “dank” memes, ie, any kind of meme that was fresh for the community.
