The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has managed to win four out of the five states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur – that went to poll in February and March, while a relatively newer Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has snatched Punjab.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP has crossed the 250 mark in the latest trends. The BJP has also extended its lead in Uttarakhand with the Congress trailing in the hill state. The saffron party won 20 seats in Goa while the Congress has won 11 seats. In Manipur too it emerged as the single-largest party, bagging 32 of the total 60 seats.

The AAP scored a spectacular victory in Punjab, winning 92 seats.

The BJP won 273 of the 403 seats in Uttar Pradesh, with the Samajwadi Party, its main challenger, a distant second with 125 seats, election results show. The BJP's consecutive win in Uttar Pradesh is a record – no party has won two elections in a row in nearly 40 years.

Calling elections a ‘festival of democracy’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the voters for their mandate in favour of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh and three other states — one he described as “jeet ka chauka”. Stating that the results validate BJP’s pro-poor and proactive governance, Modi added that the festival of Holi has begun with BJP’s win in the assembly polls.
